Fort Robinson was the site of the 1879 Cheyenne Outbreak and also of the death of famed Sioux Chief Crazy Horse in 1877. The monument is a tepee-like tower with four sides, representing the four points of the earth: north, south, east and west. It stands on 196 square feet of concrete. The monument is topped 16 feet above the ground with the Morning Star symbol of the Northern Cheyenne. Pipestone quarried from a sacred Minnesota site long used by Plains Indians is on the face of the monument. Bronze plaques on each of the four sides will list the names of the breakout survivors and casualties.
