800 W. 13th St - Preserved by the Crete Heritage Society, this 21-acre tract located along the Big Blue River, was once part of Crete founder Jesse C. Bickle's 80-acre homestead. The Bickle farmstead includes an 1870s frame Carpenter Gothic house, that conceals Bickle's 1864 log cabin, an early 20th century barn, and outbuildings. Saline County District 1 Star School is also on the site. The schoolhouse depicts the 1910-1915 era. The 5,000-sq-ft Benne Memorial Museum, built in 2003, is also located here, and includes an exhibit gallery and archive/library. The museum features exhibits that interpret Crete area history. The Society hosts heritage education activities throughout the year. Open during special exhibits and by appt. 402-826-9461 or 402-826-5270.
