Previous site of a U.S. bomber training facility during WWII, the airfield is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in the fall and winter of 1943, the airbase housed as many as 6,000 airmen. It also was the home of a 300-bed hospital, the largest in Nebraska in its day. The airbase was decommissioned in 1946 and given to the state of Nebraska that operates it today. Four of the 5 large hangers originally built to last from 5-7 years are still standing along with the original water tower. Two of the 4 runways are still operational.
