This canyon is the scene of some of the most exciting history of The Great Western Cattle Trail movement in the 1870's. Here, hundreds of Texas cattle were delivered before being driven north to Ogallalla. It is said that 150,000 cattle were moved through here in 1886, the last year of the trail drives. Cattle were checked for brands and disease. A number of pioneer burials were made in the immediate vicinity, and remains of several unidentified pioneers (adults & children) were re-interred here in 1971.
