In 1877 Chief Standing Bear and the Ponca Tribe were forced to leave their homeland in Nebraska Indian Territory in Oklahoma. After his son died, Chief Standing Bear was determined to bury his son in his homeland so he led a trip back home to Nebraska and as a result became the first Native American to be recognized as a person in a federal court. The decision was rendered in Omaha. his trail to and from Nebraska created a two-way, circular trail that you can now follow.
