Whitehead Saline Wetland

Address:
2700 Whitehead Dr.
Lincoln, NE 68504
Saline wetlands form when artesian salt water flows to the surface. Over a long period of time, salt accumulates in the soil until only salt tolerant and dependent plants and animals can survive there. The Lincoln area is one of the few places on Earth where that occurs and Whitehead Saline Wetland is one of several successful saline wetland restoration projects by the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District. After donation of the 100-acre wetland to the NRD for restoration by Whitehead Oil Company in 1996, several other adjacent properties are now being protected and restored to create a sprawling success story for this rare land type. Look for the observation deck (an Eagle Scout project) east of the Cracker Barrel Restaurant, on Whitehead Drive. Access is free! http://www.lpsnrd.org/Recreation/Recreation.htm
