Despite its name, the forest is mostly grasslands in the midst of Nebraska's vast Sandhills and covers 116,000 acres. Year-round camping anywhere in the national forest. Excellent upland game bird hunting, waterfowl and a limited amount of deer hunting. Opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, prairie lake fishing, wildflower photography and cross-country skiing. Observational blinds available March 15-May 31. Steer Creek Campground fees: $5/night, $2.50/with Golden Age or Golden Access pass.
