First Nebraska Tourism Serves event of 2017 to take place this weekend at the Crane Trust

LINCOLN, Neb. (April 24, 2017)— Kicking off the 2017 Nebraska Tourism Serves season will be an event this Friday and Saturday at the Crane Trust Nature and Visitors Center, near Grand Island.
Nebraska Tourism Serves is a Tourism Commission effort encouraging industry members to volunteer and recruit volunteers statewide to participate in service projects at tourism destinations.
“These projects are exciting because they show Nebraskans working together to preserve our valued destinations,” said Nebraska Tourism Commission executive director, John Ricks. “We’re eager to see the long-term impact that this program will have on the entire industry.”
During this Arbor Day weekend event, volunteers will be creating flower beds, planting and weeding, while sprucing up a butterfly garden on the Crane Trust property. “Our butterfly garden is the first thing you see when you walk out of the Visitor Center onto the trails and is in need of some TLC,” said Brice Krohn, Crane Trust Nature and Visitor Center. “Improving this trail experience will attract more guests to spend time with us outside of March (when the cranes are with us) and enjoy the wonderful community of a summer prairie.”
The Nebraska Tourism Serves project at the Crane Trust Nature and Visitors Center will take place Friday April 28, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday April 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Crane Trust is just south of the 305 Interstate-80 exit at 6611 W Whooping Crane Dr, Wood River, NE 68883.
Volunteer information:
●Lunch will be served
●Bring work gloves and wear long pants and shoes that can get muddy
●All tools and other supplies will be provided
●Volunteers are welcome to come and go as they please

This year Nebraska Tourism will host four of these service projects. The second will be at the Lincoln County Historical Museum in North Platte, May 17 and 18 where volunteers will be repainting one of the museum’s historic structures. The third will take place at Wessels Living History Farm in York, June 5 where volunteers will be landscaping, painting the exterior of many outbuildings and helping to create a new visitors’ information area. Lastly, the final event will be held in September at the Corps of Discovery Welcome Center in Crofton where volunteers will be repainting the building’s exterior.
