Visit Valentine: Fall in Love with the Outdoors
A small town in Nebraska’s largest county, Valentine is a gem that has to be experienced to be believed. Nestled in the scenic Sandhills, the town and surrounding Cherry County provide adventure, outdoor beauty and a few surprises you won’t want to miss.
Water Wonders
Nebraska may be a landlocked state, but it’s still home to its share of aquatic attractions. Many of them are concentrated in the Sandhills, and you should make it a point to visit them when you’re in Valentine. The Niobrara National Scenic River recently became North America’s first International Quiet Trail and it meanders through stunning scenery of cliffs, waterfalls and trees. Whether you want to kayak, canoe, tube or just take in the beauty, it’s a spot you won’t want to miss. Follow the river to Smith Falls State Park where you’ll gaze up at Nebraska’s tallest waterfall. Smith Falls isn’t the only destination for waterfall chasers. Venture to Snake River Falls or a number of other Lesser-Known Waterfalls that are a delightful discovery for anyone willing to find them. Finally, Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area is a haven for anglers and is a serene lake setting.
Animal Adventures
The Valentine area has pristine wildlife viewing opportunities, including a pair of National Wildlife Refuges. The Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, located just east of the city along the Niobrara River, is 77,000 acres of pine-covered canyon and is a go-to spot for deer, bison and elk. There are also 230 species for hardcore birders to enjoy. Head south to Valentine National Wildlife Refuge for an environment of shallow lakes and marshes and even more birds. Or, want to get up-close with North America’s largest land mammal? Golden Prairie Bison raises bison on intact, preserved grassland and gives educational tours.
